Kim & Mike’s Sunday Jam @ Spirits Week 5: Special Guest Elana Harte

May 26, 2011

Week 4 of our new Sunday Night Jam at Spirits on May 22nd was so fun with lots of music and friends. 🙂 It’s exciting to watch something grow, and it’s always surprising that each venue seems to collect it’s own little community of people. Yes there’s some cross-over, but yet, it’s a new thing too. Beautiful!

Richard Weisdorf impressed the crowd as expected with his captivating performance of new original works, plus some choice covers. One in particular I really loved was Regina Spektor’s, “Hooked into Machine”. Powerful stuff.

As usual, other people blessed us with their talents too, including James Gray who played some keys, drums and accordian, and Shawn Sage who played some of his own tunes as well as some Bob Dylan covers, and who also joined the jam with his harmonica. Michelle Lecce tested our memories bringing out the Val Halen classic, “Jump” – I had a blast playing drums on the house kit from Long & McQuade with her!

We also met some new faces – both listeners and musicians – and, if you were there on Sunday, you got a sneak peak of our Special Guest for Week 5 on May 29th Elana Harte!

Mike & I have had the pleasure of playing with Elana for a few years now, having met her at Slack’s where she presents Onstage Thursday Nights (featuring sets from herself, and other select singer-songwriters), and I’ve also been having great fun co-writing, and playing with her in other projects. Originally from Montreal, I’m so glad she now calls Toronto home. 🙂

I think Elana calls her sound “Acoustic Rock”, but make no mistake – it’s not, the gentle, folk-based kind. She’s a commanding performer: a passionate guitarist with a gorgeously deep, rich voice. With 4 solo albums to her credit alone, as well as albums with other projects such as the V-Girls (with Heather Bambrick), cuts on compilations, session work, and more – I could write a few blog posts about her, so it’s probably easier to visit her website if you want the full scoop at elanaharte.com.

There are blues and country elements to Elana’s music that can give it an americana vibe, but the songs from her upcoming release lean more to straight-ahead rock, with a hint of funk and pop. Mike & I love playing with her, I’ve loved co-writing the songs, and we know you’ll love it too when you come check her out for yourself!

Elana is currently raising funds to release her new cd, so after you check her out at Spirits on Sunday, May 29th @ 10pm, make sure to pre-order one, buy one of her others, go to a show, or check her out on i-tunes.
